There are three degrees of assault charges in Connecticut, ranging in seriousness. They are as follows:

First Degree Assault

First-degree assault is considered a Class B felony and the most serious assault charge. This assault charge includes intentionally causing serious injury by using a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument. It also includes intentionally, seriously, and permanently disfiguring another person and recklessly causing serious injury in a way that creates a risk of death and shows extreme indifference to human life. The penalties include up to 20 years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines. If you are charged with assault in the first degree, it is important you contact our office as soon as possible, so we can begin evaluating the case from day 1.

Second Degree Assault

Second-degree assault is considered a Class D Felony, which can carry up to 5 years in jail. Prosecutors must prove that you intended to cause serious injury, and that you actually did cause serious physical injury. Use of a weapon is NOT a requirement for assault in the second degree, you can be charged with this crime even if you were not using a weapon or other instrument.

Third Degree Assault

Third-degree assault is the least severe assault charge, however, it is quite serious nonetheless. This is a class A misdemeanor, which can expose you to upwards of a year in jail. The prosecution would have to prove that you intended to cause physical injury, and that you did in fact cause physical injury.
